Friendly Public Space
Friendly Public Space
Idea
The concept of Friendly Public Space promotes high quality public space which contributes to development of new urban areas, creation of comprehensive spatial principles, as well as restoration of buildings and architectural heritage compounds – as particularly interesting and creative achievements influencing the existing spatial order.
Another goal of this project is to support institutions, local authorities, local communities, groups or individuals involved in the process of public space creation, by providing patterns possible to follow as well as by recognition of existing achievements; indicating, especially to smaller municipalities who dispose of modest financial means, the principles of public space creation as a common good. The competition’s criteria are defined in a way which allows a widest possible range of activities, investments and achievements to be honored and therefore the following categories have been created:
public utility facility complex or building
multi-family residential complex or building
single-family residential complex or building
industrial development complex or building, civil engineering facility
revalorized complex or building
+ landscape architecture
In order to assess such as a wide range of themes the Jury selection had to be based on a principle of gathering experts providing all the relevant competences. Consequently, representatives of the following professional associations and organizations from the region of Lower Silesia have joined the Jury: Association of Polish Architects - the Wrocław and Jelenia Góra Branches, Association of Polish Urban Planners (TUP), Lower Silesian Regional Chamber of Architects (DOIA) and Western District Chamber of Urban Planners (ZOIU). A representative was also delegated by a Honorary Patron – the Marshal of Lower Silesia.
The Friendly Public Space competition’s awards are honorable ones, handed over to the winners in a form of statuettes and diplomas during the celebration ceremony held in the Museum of Architecture, at the end of the Festival.
The organizers wish that the exhibition of awarded projects is presented by all interested municipalities in order to promote best practice across the whole region, as well as to honor the winners of the competitions in places of the actual implementation of their projects. This exhibition should also encourage all the participants of investment processes to continuously improve the quality of proposed solutions and to overcome the stereotype of selection based solely on the lowest price principle. Architectural competitions, especially ones that lead to implementation of projects and appreciated by the Jury, should be models to follow.
