Born in Valladolid, where his grandfather was an architect, but from the age of two he has lived in Cádiz, where he saw the Light.

For over 35 years he has been a tenured professor of the Madrid School of Architecture. He has also taught at the ETH in Zurich, the EPFL in Lausanne as well as in Philadelphia, Kansas, Washington, and Tournai. In 2017 he was named Clarkson Chair in Architecture by the Buffalo University.

He has given lectures all over the world, received significant recognition and won numerous prizes and awards, including the Torroja Award for his Caja Granada or the UPM University Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2013 he was awarded the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, the International Award Architecture in Stone in Verona, and the RIBA International Fellowship 2014 of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Also in 2014 he was elected Full Member to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando of Spain. In 2015, he was awarded the BigMat in Berlin and the Spanish International Architecture Award PAEI 2015. He also won the joint first prize in a competition hosted by the Louvre.

His work has been widely recognized. The most notable examples include: houses of Turégano, de Blas and Raumplan (Madrid), Gaspar House, Asencio House, Guerrero House and the House of the Infinite (Cádiz), Rufo House (Toledo), Moliner House (Zaragoza), Olnick Spanu House (Garrison, New York), the BIT Center (Inca-Mallorca), the Between Cathedrals public space in Cádiz, the Caja de Granada Savings Bank and the Museum of Memory of Andalucía (Granada), the seat of the Regional Government of Castilla y León or the Sports Pavilion for the University Francisco de Vitoria (Madrid).

More than 30 editions of books with his texts La Idea Construida [The Built Idea], Pensar con las manos [Thinking with your hands] and Principia Architectonica have been published in several languages. In 2014 he published Poetica Architectonica. Recently, all his work has been gathered in the book Complete Works and in 2016, his latest texts came out under the title Varia Architectonica. He believes in architecture as an idea built on the principle of Gravity that constructs Space and Light that constructs Time.

His works have been exhibited at venues such as the Crown Hall by Mies (Chicago), Palladio Basilica (Vicenza), the Urban Center (New York), the St Irene Church (Istanbul), Tempietto of San Pietro (Rome). In 2009 the prestigious MA Gallery of Toto in Tokyo prepared an anthological exhibition of his work. Other notable presentations were organised by the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Pibamarmi Foundation in Vicenza (2013); the School of Architecture of Valencia (2014); the College of Architects in Cádiz, the Spanish Embassy in Teheran (2015); the Oris House of Architecture in Zagreb (2016); the Buffalo University of Architecture (2017).
